Trooper Arraigned on Domestic Violence, Kidnapping Charges for Attack on I-93
BOSTON, November 17, 2021— A Massachusetts State Trooper was arraigned on domestic violence, kidnapping, and strangulation charges in the Dorchester Division of Boston Municipal court today, Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins said.
JORDAN CAVACO, 27, of Brockton was ordered held on $2,500 bail, by Judge Samir Zaganjori. Because of the seriousness of the charges, the Commonwealth had asked for $10,000 bail. In addition, Trooper Cavaco was ordered to stay away from the victim, and the city of Fall River, except to visit his attorney. He will be fitted with GPS within 24 hours of posting bail.
ADA Ian Polumbaum, Chief of DA Rollins’ Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Unit, said Trooper Cavaco’s former girlfriend described to investigators a violent episode in Dorchester on May 28, 2021.
ADA Polumbaum said the couple was heading home in a vehicle operated by Trooper Cavaco after a night out in Boston, and they got into an argument. Cavaco was driving erratically and the victim took his cell phone away from him, Polumbaum said. Trooper Cavaco stopped the car on the shoulder of Southeast Expressway near Gallivan Boulevard, where he attacked the woman and prevented her from leaving the vehicle, when she tried to flee into the rainy night.
Trooper Cavaco had been posted most recently to the Framingham State Police barracks. He was suspended last week after the victim obtained a restraining order against him. He was arrested this morning by state police.
“I have the honor every day of working with law enforcement officers who keep our communities safe and maintain peace,’’ said District Attorney Rachael Rollins. “Members of law enforcement have a vital, highly regarded role in society and overwhelmingly, these officers serve with distinction, courage and compassion for the communities they protect. Unfortunately, as with any profession, there are a small number whose actions are shocking, unacceptable and, as we allege here, criminal.”
Trooper Cavaco is represented by attorney Brian Fahey. Anne Kelley-McCarthy is the victim witness advocate. Trooper Cavaco returns to court on Feb. 3, 2022.
All defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
