Boston Man Arraigned for Possessing Fully-Automatic .40-cal Firearm, Drugs

BOSTON, June 17, 2022— A Boston man was ordered held on $2,500 bail after being charged in the Dorchester Division of Boston Municipal Court yesterday with possessing a fully-automatic .40-cal firearm fitted with a high-capacity magazine, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said.

JHAYSEN CARRION-GRULLON, 21, was charged with illegal weapon and ammunition possession, along with possession with intent to distribute a Class D substance (marijuana), operating a vehicle with excessive tinted windows and various civil driving violations.

At about 11:55 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, Boston Police and Massachusetts State Police observed a vehicle with excessive window tint driving above the speed limit near the intersection of Freeport and Kimball streets in Dorchester.  After pulling the vehicle over officers, found seven bags of marijuana and a black .40-cal Glock firearm fitted with an auto “sear” device and a high-capacity magazine loaded with 21 rounds.

A sear device is used to convert a semi-automatic firearm into a fully-automatic weapon.

Prosecutors requested $10,000 bail.  Judge Samir Zaganjori ordered $2,500 bail with the condition that Carrion-Grullon seek or maintain employment during the pendency of the case.

Hayden, who is walking with faith leaders and police tonight in Dorchester to call attention to gun violence, praised police for pulling the automatic weapon off the street.

“It is alarming to ponder the human devastation that could be wrought by a weapon like this.  With every gun incident we see, including two broad-daylight shootings just this week in Boston, the need for a full-scale societal response becomes more urgent,” Hayden said.

Carrion-Gullon returns to court August 23 for a probable cause hearing.
