Dorchester man charged in connection with weekend shooting, held without bail

BOSTON, July 5, 2022 — A Dorchester man with prior gun convictions is being held without bail today after being charged in connection with one of the numerous shootings in Boston over Independence Day weekend, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.

JASON MEEKS, 41, is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and illegal possession of a firearm, fourth offense.  Judge Stephen McClenon ordered Meeks held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing to be held July 11.

Meeks served 15 years for a prior manslaughter conviction. He also has prior firearm convictions.

At around 11 p.m. on Sunday, Boston Police responding to a call for a person shot at Greenville Street noticed a car coming from that direction with a significant amount of blood, plus bloody handprints, on the driver’s door and window.  After initially refusing to stop, the operator, Meek, followed instructions to exit the vehicle.  Meeks was bleeding profusely from the left side of his face.  Police found a Smith & Wesson gun, covered in blood, in the front passenger area of the Meeks’s vehicle.  A magazine matching the weapon was located at the Greenville Street shooting scene.

Meeks was arrested and transported to Boston Medical Center.  He was arraigned in his hospital bed today.

The investigations into the Greenville Street shooting and the numerous other weekend shootings across the city are continuing, Hayden said.

“The volume of gunfire we saw in Boston this past weekend should terrify every corner of society.  We were extremely lucky to see no loss of life.  But we can’t count on luck as we move through the long, hot nights of summer.  We have too many guns in the hands of people too willing to use them, and any effective response requires across-the-board societal involvement,” Hayden said.
