Dorchester man indicted for July murder of 19-year-old

BOSTON, December 20, 2023 – At the scene of 19-year-old Tywon Meek’s fatal shooting near a Roxbury playground last July, DA Kevin Hayden joined Mayor Wu and others in condemning gun violence and imploring the community to help investigators identify the person responsible for Meek’s death.

Today, a Suffolk County grand jury indicted ANTHONY RAMOS, 28, of Dorchester for the July 6 murder of Meek.  Ramos is in custody after being arrested last week on a firearm charge related to the case.  He will be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on first-degree murder, possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and carrying a loaded firearm charges at a later date.

“To call the violent death of a 19-year-old a tragedy is somehow insufficient to the horror and loss that the reality entails.  There is no closure or finality to the grief and anguish being felt by Tywon’s family and friends.  There are only memories of his far-too-short life and the pursuit of justice for his far-too-early death,” Hayden said.

Boston police responded to 5 Leyland Street shortly before midnight on July 6 for reports of a person shot.  Officers found Meek suffering from gunshot wounds.  He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Hayden thanked the community and investigators from Boston police and his office for putting together the information that led to today’s indictment.  He pledged the full resources of his victim witness advocate team to help Meek’s family through the upcoming court process.

“Our work begins at the scene and extends through every part of the court process.  We can’t erase any of the family’s pain but we can comfort and accompany them as the case works its way through the system,” Hayden said.

All charged individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
