Bail revoked for Dorchester man seized with gun, drugs, cash

BOSTON, July 16, 2024 – A Dorchester man had his prior bail revoked in Dorchester BMC Monday after being charged with illegally possessing a large-capacity firearm with the serial number defaced and fentanyl trafficking, District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.

KELVIN ORTIZ-GUERRERO, 25, was charged with illegal possession of a large-capacity firearm, illegal possession of a loaded firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, illegal possession of ammunition and trafficking fentanyl over 10 grams.

Judge Erika P. Reis set bail at $10,000 on the new charges and revoked Ortiz-Guerrero’s bail on an open case involving negligent operation of a motor vehicle charges in Worcester County.  Ortiz-Guerrero will return to court August 8 for a probable cause hearing.

At about 8:10 p.m. on July 10, Boston police noticed a red Jeep Cherokee on Blue Hill Avenue with an expired inspection sticker and excessive tint on the windows. Officers saw the vehicle weaving through traffic and making improper lane changes.  Officers pulled the vehicle over in front of 814 Blue Hill Avenue.

Ortiz-Guerrero was a passenger in the car, which was registered to his mother. Officers reported Ortiz-Guerrero and the driver to be nervous, and Ortiz-Guerrero to be pinning himself against the passenger door. They then asked the two men to exit the vehicle.

Officers located a hidden compartment in the passenger door window panel. In it, they found a Springfield Hellcat 9mm firearm, with a defaced serial number, loaded with 12 rounds. Officers also found more than 12 grams of suspected fentanyl in the glove box and a scale in a hidden compartment in the center console. Officers found drug residue and one bullet under the driver’s seat and recovered $1,060 during a frisk of Ortiz-Guerrero.

Officers arrested Ortiz-Guerrero at the scene.

“This incident involves a combination of factors that combine to have a degrading effect on our neighborhoods: guns, drugs and cash.  Every time an illegal gun is recovered it increases the safety of our police officers and our residents, and inches us forward in our efforts to reduce gun violence throughout our city,” Hayden said.

All charged individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
