Victim Assistance

Human Trafficking

Despite its portrayal in popular culture as harmless and even glamorous, prostitution is anything but.  Survivors of human trafficking often come from backgrounds of trauma, substance use disorder, and other concerns that leave them reluctant to turn to police and prosecutors for help.  The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has a long history of supporting juvenile and adult victims of commercial sexual exploitation and ensuring that they are treated with dignity while receiving the multifaceted services necessary to rebuild their lives.

Human trafficking is a complex crime with many moving parts, each requiring special expertise across various disciplines.  The prosecutors, victim advocates, and support staff who work in the Human Trafficking and Exploitation Unit understand the challenges faced by victims attempting to escape exploitation and work with professionals from law enforcement, social services, and other disciplines to achieve the best outcomes for those who need our help.

T visas are available for undocumented immigrant victims of human trafficking
