17-year-old held pending dangerousness hearing in Jeremiah Burke school shooting
BOSTON, October 5, 2022 — A 17-year-old Jeremiah Burke High School student today was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing after being arraigned for a shooting at the school Tuesday that injured another student, District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.
The juvenile is charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and carrying a firearm on school grounds.
Dorchester Juvenile Court Judge Sylvia Gomes ordered the juvenile to return to court Tuesday, October 11 for the dangerousness hearing.
Assistant District Attorney Caitlin Fitzgerald said Boston police responded to a call at the school at about 9:35 a.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, officers found the victim lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gun shot wound. The victim was transported to Boston Medical Center. Officers found several spent shell casings at the scene. Witnesses provided a description of the suspect, and the juvenile was apprehended nearby. The juvenile was identified by witnesses and arrested.
“This is a horrific event in every possible aspect. There’s a young person with a bullet wound, another young person with a dramatically altered life path and a whole community of students and staffers who need and deserve all the help and support we can give them. Once again, we’re looking at the terrible consequences of too many guns and too many people willing to use them,” Hayden said.
