Grand Jury Indicts Alleged Serial Rapist
BOSTON, September 16, 2020—Yesterday, a Suffolk County Grand Jury returned indictments against ALVIN CAMPBELL, moving the charges against him to the Suffolk Superior Court, where he faces the potential of life in prison if convicted.
Campbell, 39, of Cumberland, R.I., will face arraignment at a later date on the indictments returned yesterday, which include two counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated rape, five counts of rape, two counts of indecent assault and battery, one count of assault with intent to rape and eight counts of filming an unsuspecting person in the nude. Campbell is additionally charged as a habitual offender based on prior convictions for acts of violence and firearm offenses. The habitual offender indictment opens Campbell to an enhanced sentence – the potential of life in prison – if found guilty of the charged offenses.
These charges reflect assaults against seven women between 2017 and 2019. Campbell was previously charged in connection with these offenses in the Central, Roxbury, and South Boston divisions of Boston Municipal Court. Yesterday’s indictments move all of Campbell’s pending Suffolk County cases to Suffolk Superior Court.
Campbell was previously indicted in March of this year for an attack on an eighth woman that occurred in 2019.
In six of the indicted offenses, Campbell allegedly posed as a rideshare driver in order to target women in the area of bars or other locations. In two incidents, the victims believed that Campbell was a bouncer at a Boston establishment. Most of the assault occurred in Campbell’s vehicle. He is accused of assaulting two women in their own apartment after he drove them to the location. He is charged with filming each of the victims, who were unconscious, in a state of undress. In five of the assaults, he allegedly filmed the victims as he raped them.
