Statement of DA Rachael Rollins on Arraignment of Michael McKoy
BOSTON, Sept. 14, 2020 — A Boston man was arraigned on multiple charges in the Dorchester Division of Boston Municipal Court and ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.
Michael McKoy, 35, was charged as an Armed Career Criminal Level 3 and was arraigned on six counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, four counts of carrying a loaded firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, one count of unlawful possession of a large capacity firearm, 10 counts of unlawful possession of ammunition, four counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, and four counts of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident causing personal injury. Additional charges included possession of a firearm in commission of a felony, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident causing property damage, refusal to stop for a police officer and trafficking Class A drugs.
On Saturday evening, police attempted to stop Mr. McKoy while he was driving. After pulling over, McKoy then took off and struck several officers as they approached the car. Four were injured.
“This individual had six illegal firearms, many of them loaded, and drove recklessly through the streets of Boston, harming four police officers while also putting members of the community at significant risk. I will always act to hold individuals accountable for acts of violence. These four Boston Police officers were attempting to protect us as a community. They put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe and deserve our thanks,’’ said District Attorney Rachael Rollins.
“Law enforcement officers risk their lives for us every day, as we see over and over again, to keep our communities safe. I am deeply concerned about the most recent incident on Saturday when two Los Angeles County sheriff deputies were ambushed and shot in the head while sitting in their patrol cruiser near the Compton Metro station. Thankfully they are both in stable condition after surgery, and I wish them, and the four Boston Police officers, complete and speedy recoveries.”
Assistant District Attorney Amanda Cascione asked that Mr. McKoy be held without bail, pending a dangerousness hearing. Judge Jonathan Tynes agreed and set the hearing date for Sept. 23, 2020. Mr. McKoy is represented by attorney Lumina Sato.
All charged individuals are presumed innocent until and unless found guilty in a court of law.
