Bail revoked for Boston man charged with Macy’s Downtown Crossing unarmed robbery
BOSTON, November 16, 2022 — A Boston man with nine outstanding arrest warrants and more than 80 prior arraignments dating to the early 1990s was arraigned in Central BMC today on robbery charges stemming from two same-day September thefts from Macy’s in Downtown Crossing, District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.
TIMOTHY CAMPBELL, 44, is charged with unarmed robbery and being a common and notorious thief. Judge Eleanor Sinnott revoked Campbell’s bail on previous cases for 90 days and also set $2,000 bail and conditions that Campbell stay away from Downtown Crossing and wear a GPS device with a monitored exclusion zone. Campbell will return to court December 12 for a probable cause hearing.
Assistant District Attorney Liana LaMattina said that on September 9 at about 5:24 pm Boston police responded to a call for a person with a gun at Macy’s. Store security personnel told police that a man had attempted to steal $371.36 worth of merchandise. When he was stopped by security he threatened to shoot them. Security personnel told police that the man, who was familiar to them and identified by them as Campbell, had stolen a $345 pair of Versace sunglasses earlier that day. After viewing surveillance video, police confirmed Campbell’s identity and sought an arrest warrant. Campbell was arrested yesterday on a separate offense.
“This incident goes beyond simple shoplifting. There’s threats involved, and a past history that suggests a troubling pattern of similar offenses. These types of crimes have impacts beyond the loss to the merchants. They can impact the entire community,” Hayden said.
